Francisco Javier Álvarez (born November 19, 2001) is a Major League Baseball catcher, and main current catcher for the New York Mets.
Biography and Minor Leagues[]
Álvarez was born in Guatire, Venezuela. He started as an international free agent and was signed with the Mets in July of 2018. His early years in the minor leagues were very successful, with him finishing with a .312 batting average, 7 home runs, and 26 RBIs in his debut season. After game cancellations due to Covid, he was invited to do Spring training with the Mets in 2021. That season he spent half of it with the St. Lucie Mets, and the Brooklyn Cyclones. This season was even stronger than the previous one, finishing with 24 home runs and 70 RBIs. He was later selected for the All-Star Futures Game.
Major Leagues[]
Álvarez came back to Spring training in 2022, and this time, on September 30th, he made his debut in the majors as a DH. After 8 hitless at bats, in a game against the Washington Nationals, and his first time as a catcher in the majors, he hit a 439-foot home run off of Carl Edwards Jr.
2023 Season[]
In the beginning of the 2023 season, Álvarez played for the Syracuse Mets. However on April 7th, he was called to play with back-up catcher Tomás Nido, after Omar Narvaez's leg injury. After an impressive game behind the plate, he replaced Narvaez as starting catcher. He is currently hitting frequent homers and withholding a good performance for the mets.
Trivia[]
In 2022, Álvarez was the youngest player in the MLB.
